Dimmi o Timoniere,
Verso quale stella
Dirigi il mio vascello?
Cercavo isole di gioia
E naufragai su scogli di dolore,
Sognavo albe sfolgoranti
E lividi tramonti avvolsero l’andare.

Parla o Timoniere,
Che orizzonte
Traguarda il tuo sestante?
Cercavo una terra di saggezza,
E alto udii delle sirene il canto.
Sognavo approdi da festose genti
E dolenti mi apparvero gli sguardi.

Lungo è stato
Questo viaggio
Ricco di bonacce e di bufere.
Ma ora che la meta
S’avvicina,
Il senso della rotta
Si disvela.

Tu taci, o Timoniere
Ma il tuo sguardo
Tradisce il tuo segreto.
Tutto ora vedo
Nei tuoi occhi – capovolto,
Cielo e mare
Dolore e gioia.

Tell me oh Helmsman,
What star do you
Steer toward my boat?
I was looking for islands of joy
And wrecked on rocks of sorrow,
I dreamed of blazing suns
And bruised sunsets shrouded my path.

Tell me oh Helmsman,
What horizon
Is pointing your sextant?
I was looking for a land of wisdom,
And loud I heard sirens’ singing.
I dreamed of joyous people’s landing
And sorrowful seemed their look to me.

It’s been
A long travel
Rich in doldrums and blizzards.
But now that closer
Is the goal
The meaning of the course
Is revealed.

You don’t talk, oh Helmsman
But your gaze
betrays your secret.
All I see now
In your eyes – upside down,
Sky and sea
Pain and joy.
