io odio i convulsi singhiozzi segreti dei giovani angosciati
con se stessi, in preda al rimorso delle azioni commesse,
io vedo nella vita umile la madre maltrattata dai figli,
morente, abbandonata, smunta, disperata,
io vedo la moglie maltrattata dal marito, vedo il seduttore
ingannevole di giovani donne,
io noto gli strazi della gelosia e dell’amore respinto
che cercano di nascondersi, io vedo tutto questo sulla terra,
io vedo l’opera della guerra, della pestilenza, della tirannia,
io vedo martiri e prigionieri,
io osservo la fame sul mare, osservo i marinai che tirano
a sorte per stabilire chi dovrà essere ucciso perché gli altri vivano,
io osservo le umiliazioni e le degradazioni inflitte dai
prepotenti ai lavoratori, ai poveri, ai negri e agli altri;
tutto questo… tutta la meschinità e la sofferenza senza
fine io contemplo standomene qui seduto,
