Percezione e concetto, la strana coppia / Percept and concept, the odd couple

angst1

Inizio a sudare copiosamente.

– Dovrei farmi portare all’ospedale. Sveglio mia moglie?
No, meglio di no.

Inizio a calmare battito, respiro, pensieri.

Two nights ago I wake up of a sudden feeling an oppressive weight on my chest, barely able to breathe.
I look at the watch: it’s half past one.
I sweat profusely. I sit down on my bed.

– What is this? It looks like a heart attack … how are the symptoms? They resemble these …
– What am I going to do now?

Heart begins to beat faster.

– Should I go to the hospital? Awake my wife? No, wait a minute.
– I’m so busy these days, I have to leave soon, This is the last thing I needed…
– Wait, now I look up on the internet. No, better not.

In the meanwhile, the grip gets worse.

Then, suddenly, a thought.

It comes from Philosophy of Freedom; it’s that passage about someone trying to understand – at dusk – what is the object in front of him – object that he, in the absence of light, can barely glimpse.
It can be everything: a bush, a rock, a dog. He has the percept but he’s not able to match it with the appropriate concept.
So he can’t really know it. It can be anything…

Anything? So, wait …

– And what if, by chance, I were matching a wrong concept with the percept of the weight on my midriff ?
– What if the term ‘heart attack’ were not the right match for this condition?

The heart begins to calm down.

I get out of bed, go into the living room and sit on the coach. I start to calm down my pulse, my breath, my thoughts.
When the fury of inner elements returns to a sensible situation, I drink a ginger/lemon herbal tea.
After a few minutes the pain and the heavy weight on my chest disappear.
It was a digestive system failure.
You know, matching the wrong concept to our percept can be sometimes really unpleasant.

The percept is thus not something finished and self-contained, but one side of the total reality. The other side is the concept. The act of knowing is the synthesis of percept and concept. Only percept and concept together constitute the whole thing.
